In its opening weekend at the Japanese box office, the first Attack on Titan movie has beaten all its competition and come out top.

Earning around 600 million yen ($4.8 million) and selling 476,000 tickets in its opening weekend, the first Attack on Titan movie has done pretty well.

Based on the very popular manga of the same name penned by Hajime Isayama, it has already received an equally successful anime adaptation but this new movie is the first attempt at live-action. According to Isayama the plot of the movie also deviates quite massively from the host material, so that could be interesting.

However amongst all this good news, it appears that the film has been panned by Japanese critics and the director, Shinji Higuchi, has gotten in all manner of hot water for insulting the movie’s promotion staff for apparently not handling the situation better.

As he said on his Facebook page, “I did it! If the experts had praised me, I wouldn’t have known what to do, but this makes me feel better, speaking of which, who are the idiots who sent these guys invitations to the preview?”

Naturally this produced a pretty hefty wave of condemnation towards the director, to which he swiftly apologized though not without adding an extra barb, “Who I’m really ‘outraged’ at are the blockheads in charge of publicity who sent preview invitations to people who don’t deserve to be shown private screenings, and let them into the screening room once they’re identified. I have no way of knowing how my personal feelings will be received, but I didn’t lose my temper.”

While I have a great deal of respect for Higuchi and his work in anime, I do feel he is being a bit naïve and precious about the publicity for this movie. People are allowed to think it’s bad and by all accounts it does sound rather disappointing.

With that said though, punters have flocked in huge numbers to see the film regardless. This is likely because the manga and anime have both been hugely successful, so the fanbase is already massive as it is.

What will be interesting to see is whether the box-office will have any legs after the opening weekend and more importantly if moviegoers will check out the second movie coming out this September after watching this one.

For now though, this new Attack on Titan movie is doing well at least. Funimation will be releasing the movie in US theaters this fall.
